About Me

As a longtime educator and a lifelong learner, I am passionate about showing students that learning goes beyond just passing the next test; it involves developing skills, creating systems, and cultivating mindsets that will serve them for the rest of their lives. While I am based in Los Angeles, I’ve had the privilege of supporting hundreds of students around the world through virtual mentorship, helping them implement those building blocks that lead to real growth. I’m excited at the prospect of supporting you or your child’s learning journey and celebrating your success story.

Some achievements I am proud of

19 years as an Educator

I’ve spent nearly two decades as a teacher and tutor. My journey began during my freshman year of high school; I was hired by my school as an algebra tutor, and it has evolved into such a rewarding career.

18 countries reached

Thanks to virtual tutoring, I have worked with students and families all over the USA and in Asia, Europe, Latin America, and the Caribbean. My life is enriched by their diversity.

5000+ Test Prep Instruction Hours

I began coaching students through test prep almost a decade ago, the digital SAT, ACT (paper and digital), ISEE, and SSAT.

9 years serving neurodivergent students

Both as a school teacher and a private tutor, I have gotten years of experience helping students with mild to moderate learning differences. They include (but are not limited to) ADHD, autism, dysgraphia, dyslexia, auditory processing disorder, and selective mutism.

Over 90% of Students Supported in two or more Academic Subjects and Standardized Tests

I have garnered years of experience effectively teaching and tutoring STEM subjects, English-Language Arts, Test Prep, and Essay Writing. Click the "Services" tab for the full breakdown.

Your math mistakes repeat. That's the good news.

This free guide is built on learning research to show why capable students lose easy points: attention and memory issues tend to be the culprits, not low math knowledge. It also includes some approaches that I bring to my one-on-one sessions. I offer five mindful-math habits that can be applied to any level of math and math-containing subjects (SAT and ACT math, chemistry, physics, etc.).

What I'm Learning

Notes from Mary

One week it’s what an admissions dean told me at a conference. Then, it’s why a student keeps missing the same kind of math problem. After that? How students can use the “due date” vs. “do date” distinction for better planning in school. Notes from Mary is my free newsletter where I share what I learn—and what I think—from the people I meet, the research I read, and the students I’ve learned from over the past two decades.
